Lord Voldemort, also known as "the Dark Lord," "You-Know-Who," "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named," or simply "Voldemort," whose real name is Tom Marvolo Riddle (Tom Elvis Jedusor in the French version), is a character in the Harry Potter saga written by J. K. Rowling. Voldemort is the main villain of the story: a wizard with considerable powers, he tries to seize power in Great Britain to reshape the wizarding world according to his ideals.
J. K. Rowling first mentions him in the first chapter of the first book in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Voldemort appears in one form or another in six of the seven books, the exception being the third, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
In the movies, Lord Voldemort is primarily portrayed by Ralph Fiennes.
The series' hero, Harry Potter, learns on his eleventh birthday that his parents were murdered ten years earlier by a dark wizard whose name wizards are extremely reluctant to utter, so great are his crimes: Lord Voldemort. He also learns that Voldemort then tried to kill Harry, but his spell seems to have bounced off the young boy, leaving only a lightning-shaped scar on his forehead. Voldemort disappeared after this event and is presumed dead, although opinions are divided on the matter.
During the book, Harry, enrolled at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, discovers that Voldemort has survived the destruction of his body and is plotting with one of his teachers, Quirinus Quirrell, to try to regenerate himself by appropriating a philosopher's stone. Voldemort, incarnated simply as a second face on the back of the teacher's head, attacks Harry but discovers that his touch is unbearable thanks to the sacrifice of Harry's mother, who died to save him. Quirrell dies from the shock and Voldemort disappears again.
(*) A bobblehead figure is a type of collectible toy, whose head is often oversized compared to its body. Instead of a solid junction with the rest of the body, it is connected by a spring or hook so that the head wobbles when touched, hence the name.
