Dementors are considered among the most repulsive creatures in existence. J. K. Rowling stated that the idea for these creatures came to her when she recalled a time in her life when she was unemployed and saw everything in black, almost falling into depression. According to her, Dementors are a metaphorical representation of the state she was in at the time.
Dementors are cloaked in large black robes that completely mask them except for their hands, which look like dead, rotting flesh. To move, Dementors glide across the ground. They are soulless, which is why they feed on the souls of their victims, their joys and happy memories, leaving only unhappy ones. In general, they only attack criminals or if they have been ordered to, but Harry has such horrible memories that they attack him without hesitation or authorization. Dementors cannot be destroyed, but their numbers can be controlled if the conditions that allow them to reproduce, namely despair and degradation, are eliminated.
Only wizards can see them. Muggles can only feel the effects of their presence. It seems that Squibs are also able to see them, although this point is not clarified.
Initially, the Ministry of Magic employed Dementors to guard Azkaban, the wizarding prison. Indeed, these creatures are capable of making one forget all feelings of joy; those who endure their presence only remember their most terrible memories and can go mad. Their proximity therefore constitutes both a punishment and a means of preventing escapes. We also learn that Sirius Black managed to escape Azkaban by transforming into a dog to slip between the bars of his prison (indeed, Sirius Black is an Animagus), because knowing he was innocent, without being a happy feeling, allowed him to lessen the impact of the Dementors on him. He was thus able to slip unsuspectingly out of the penitentiary and reach the mainland.
The only way to neutralize a Dementor is to create a Patronus, a particularly difficult protective charm to perform that concentrates positive emotions in the form of an ethereal animal.
